Autolib started, city financed carsharing in Paris!

Written by Tom

Autolib in Paris started! In spring I was writing about Autolib for a first time. This week it started officially. In Autolib they have 66 full electrocars at the moment for 2 months trial period. If everything will be OK, Autolib is plannning to bring 3000 more cars during 2012! Now there are 33 car stations. There are several carsharing systems, but this one is the first really public and financed by the city. Some carsharings are runned by the banks or big companys.

Autolib is using beautiful pinninfarina designers bluecar.

The first thing that most people notice is the solar panels on the roof and hood of the Bluecar electric car. The Bluecar is 3.65 meters in lenght (about 12 feet), 1.72 meter wide (5.6 feet), and has a height of 1.6 meter (5.25 feet). The trunk has a capacity of 200 liters, or 7 cubic feet. ABS brakes are standards, power steering, airbags, air conditioning, and an interesting feature that Pininfarina calls “soft sound”. It apparently makes the electric car a bit more noisy so that pedestrians can hear it better.  - this is very ipmortant for me as a cyclist. The brake lights are red LEDs, a good way to use less electricity.

Pricing is very important and it looks very fair. Velib is not very expensive so what about Autolib ?

Firstly you have to register. A year-long package costs 144€ ($190).  Then just take your car, the first half hour you drive is 5€, the next is 4€.
